Arnold Woldwide and Solarsilk team up to create customizable Olympics banners

Arnold Worldwide contracted Solarsilk to build a banner for Carnival Cruiselines where users can submit a photo that will later appear in that banner, live on the web.

The banner was built for Flash 10, which allows the user to choose an image from his/her computer, and load the image directly into Flash (Flash 9 requires an image upload and download). The banner creates a jpg file and uploads it along with user data to PointRoll. The PointRoll backend pushes the submission into a moderation system. After moderation, the user gets an approval email with a link to NBCOlympics.com/athletes, where their picture appears in the banner for the world to see.

Virtual Flash World created for TyraBanks.com

With an amazing team including Thrust Design Group (design), TwoPointO (backend CMS development), Koalition (motion design), and Linn Olofsdotter (illustration), Solarsilk created a Virtual World for the new TyraBanks.com.

It features a 3-layer horizontal and vertical parallax effect involving some nifty math. XML, dynamically written by the CMS, controls all the content, the preloading order of the sections, the visual stacking order of the sections, the preloader color for each section, and the vertical and horizontal positioning of each section, among other things. Tyra is able to change content very easily in the Virtual World, re-ordering elements and changing images, videos and links. The piece also integrates swfAddress (enabling use of the browser’s back and forward buttons), as well as in-Flash video players from the Kyte video platform.

Tyra is still working on filling out the content in the piece, but we wanted to tell you all about it while she is in the process.

The Wall Street Journal Digital Network launched a new service called The News Hub, a twice daily live webcast of the day’s headline news. Solarsilk created video banners to help promote the service.

Today we presented our Augmented Reality Twitter search app called solarTweetAR to the enthusiastic attendees, getting a lot of great feedback.

Fellow presenters today included Google, Adobe, Eyeblaster, EyeWonder, Oddcast, Studio IMC and others.

solarPong3D :: a Flash / Papervision3D Pong game

In an effort to familiarize ourselves with Papervision3D, we put together a demo game of the classic arcade game Pong. Our version, called solarPong3D, features astoundingly lifelike characters (sort of) playing with a beach ball on a 3D beach. This is a beta version, and we have plans to add some features like increasing difficulty levels. Give it a try .

We just launched a beta version of solarTube, a demo project showcasing a combination of technologies.

It combines:
• Flash AS3 OOP
• Papervision3D
• pulling YouTube RSS feeds, using the AS3 YouTube Data API written by Martin Legris
• displaying a YouTube video in Flash using YouTube’s new Chromeless player
• Facebook Connect’s Comments Box – a way for a site to implement Facebook Connect along with user comments
• Flash’s External Interface calls Javascript to dynamically write a new Comments Box for each video displayed, displaying that video’s comments

Solarsilk launches Novartis / CIBA Vision’s Dailies.com

Today Solarsilk, along with Saatchi & Saatchi, launched a full Flash site for Dailies, the global brand of daily-use contact lenses. A 3-month effort produced this complex site that incorporates webcam image capture and upload, multiple form submission to CIBA’s backend system, a visual “spot the differences” game, a Flash scrollbar, as well as many other tech goodies. The site was built fully with Actionscript 3.0, employing standard Object Oriented Programming (OOP) techniques. Much of the content is controlled using external XML files. The source files are being sent to regions around the world for localization, along with our detailed code guide that will help those developers understand how to edit the code according to their needs.

Solarsilk relocates to new office space

We’ve outgrown our old office and have upgraded to a commercial loft space in Williamsburg at the Northpoint office building at 181 North 11th Street on the corner of North 11th and Driggs Ave. We’re loving the space, the light, and definitely the brand new organic market that arrived just across the street soon after we moved in!

Solarsilk.com iPhone Dashcode version launched

Solarsilk created an alternate version of the solarsilk.com site, for viewing on the iPhone. Written in Apple’s Dashcode, the same language used to create Mac Dashboard widgets, the site leverages Mac-specific CSS in Dashcode to display content specifically formatted for the iPhone. Our device detection script serves this special site to users who visit solarsilk.com on their iPhone Safari browser.

Solarsilk builds Flash avatar system. 100,000+ avatars created

Solarsilk helped an NYC agency deliver a successful site to their client, a national educational publisher. We architected and built Flash components that enabled users to create an avatar with many thousands of possible combinations of hair, hat, clothes, sunglasses, etc. Over 100,000 avatars have been created since the site launched.

Solarsilk builds bilingual microsite

Solarsilk worked with a New York agency to build a customer-centric, bilingual Flash microsite for a national cell phone carrier. All site content lives in external XML files, which are controlled through an agency-built CMS. Text is formatted using external CSS files as well as CSS tags used within the XML nodes. The site launched in 3 phases, with different content in each phase.

Solarsilk creates interactive map for I Love NY

Partnering with Saatchi & Saatchi, Solarsilk built an interactive map that lived on ILoveNY.com/summer. With data pulled from an XML file, I Love NY has the ability, through their CMS, to add and remove pin points and define pin location, attraction names, descriptions and images. The CMS generates the XML file that is pulled into the map.
